The Torrens Road to River Torrens was an important infrastructure project to drastically improve travel time for commuters. Given the cultural significance of the site for the local Kaurna people, EBS Heritage was engaged by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) to undertake detailed cultural heritage risk assessment. Environmental Officer of DPTI, Jody Zander said the work EBS Heritage did was important to develop a strategy to ensure cultural heritage of the area was protected where possible. “EBS Heritage provided awareness of the cultural significance of the River Torrens and limitations to areas of impact within the river environment,” Ms Zander said. EBS Heritage provided a risk assessment map showing areas of high, moderate and low risk within the current project areas. Recommendations on how to manage these risks through proposed construction techniques were also provided. A cultural heritage risk assessment is important for any infrastructure project to ensure the responsibilities under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988 are adhered to.
